I am so very grateful for pastors who 'stand under the text', as Helmut Thielicke put it. They study and firmly grasp its message and are eager to proclaim its life-giving words.
They consequently waste no time with pitiful attempts at relevance--cutesy stories designed to make parishioners chuckle or news of what they did while on summer vacation.
The business of Law and Gospel presses them on to the cross of Christ, for they know that this message is serious business, a matter of death and life to their parishioners.
